Casino City’s Friday Five: First week of summer edition

22 June 2018

It’s finally summer and the warm weather is upon us here at Casino City world headquarters in Boston. The World Cup has entered the second round of the group stage, but there was a lot of other news to get to this week. We had a wide variety of developments, including more World Series of Poker, jackpot winners and new casino announcements. Let’s start with learning how to turn $25 into $3 million. 5. $3.3 million jackpot at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek The anonymous winner from West Palm Beach turned a $25 bet on IGT’s Wheel of Fortune slot into a jackpot worth over $3.3 million over the Father’s Day weekend. The jackpot on the $5 machine was marked the highest payout for Seminole Casino Coconut Creek. This wasn’t the first major jackpot at a Seminole Tribe property. Back on 29 June 2012, there was a $3.6 million payout on a jackpot at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa. 4. Penn National Gaming acquires Margaritaville Resort Casino Earlier this week, it was announced that the operations of Margaritaville Resort Casino Bossier City, Louisiana will be obtained by Penn National Gaming for approximately $155 million cash. Penn National is entering a triple net lease agreement with VICI Properties. The lease will have an initial annual rent of approximately $23 million and an initial term of 15 years, with four different five-year renewal options. The property features 26,500 square feet of casino space, 395 hotel rooms, an island-style escape theme, six restaurants and food and beverage outlets and a 9,500 square feet of meeting space. 3. PokerStars Trio Series exceeds €5 million This is the first tournament series to celebrate the new shared player pool of Portugal, France and Spain. The total prize pool of the tournament was €6,457,486, which obviously exceeded the €5 million prize pool that was guaranteed. The 78-event PokerStars tournament took place from 3-13 June and included a nice payout for the Main Event winner. Ineed1000ETH from Spain took home €71,917.47 after defeating over 2,600 players in the Main Event that surpassed the €500,000 guarantee by reaching €615,195. 2. Fort McDowell to break ground on new casino We’ve talked about new casinos opening up in the state of Massachusetts recently, but this week there was news about Arizona adding a new casino to the list. A week from today, the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation will officially break ground on their new 166,341 square foot casino. Their goal is to have construction begin toward the end of the summer and hopefully have it completed and open to the public in the spring of 2020. 1. The Grinder wins fourth WSOP bracelet We are nearly one month into the World Series of Poker and this week had some compelling events come to a close, but none greater than Event #33, when Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi won the $50,000 Poker Players Championship for a record-setting third time. The poker pro from South Florida collected his fourth career gold bracelet at the WSOP with the victory. His most recent WSOP bracelet win was in the same event back in 2012. With 62 career WSOP cashes, the 37-year-old has earned over $9 million throughout his career.
