The AI world is still buzzing about last week’s revelation that an OpenAI LLM broke out of its sandbox to hack another company that had the tools the LLM determined it needed to complete its assigned mission. Some people are wondering why, if AI is such an obvious hacking tool, has there yet to be a tsunami of high-profile AI-enhanced hacking? Of course, just because something hasn’t happened yet doesn’t mean it won’t. Also, in terms of nation-state hacking, the idea is to burrow deep into critical infrastructure and wait for a moment when pulling the trigger will have maximum impact, like the outset of a shooting war, rather than acting immediately when there’s a less decisive payoff. But it makes you wonder if (for the moment, at least) some fragile equilibrium has been established between hackers using AI tools to infiltrate systems and those systems using AI tools to identify (and patch) chinks in their armour before outsiders do. Then there are the cynics who suspect that this latest ‘jailbreak’ is pseudo-stealth marketing intended to promote the advances being made in the race to become The One AI To Rule Them All™. (After all, OpenAI did see fit to credit the “state-of-the-art cyber capabilities” of its rogue AI agent.) Critics have noted that Altman and other AI execs have walked back earlier predictions of massive AI-induced job losses, partly because they realized this message wasn’t endearing them to the public, but also because AI is (again, for the moment) proving less capable of producing quality work without human oversight than originally hyped. There’s also the possibility that Altman & Co are being completely honest and they just don’t know why/how this happened. And yet, commercial imperatives keep them pushing the envelope rather than let a rival claim responsibility for the end of the world as we know it. The old Hollywood adage that nobody knows anything has never seemed so applicable to another industry. I’m reminded of Ned Beatty’s character in Network yelling “you are meddling with the primal forces of nature, Mr. Beale!” Who here thinks the AI overlords actually have their beasts under control? While you’re mulling that over, I’ll be asking ChatGPT how to make an Apocalypse Soon cocktail. Gin, check. Vermouth, check. Strychnine… wait, what?
