With great pleasure, KPMG Malta announce the online publication of their 2017 iGaming Summit report. Providing an in-depth account of the event which took place last November, the report encapsulates the key trends, market developments and latest regulatory updates from the world of iGaming. For everyone who attended the eSummit in Malta, and for those who missed it, the report makes essential reading, and is available to view or download here: goo.gl/g7JcSX Held on the 24th November 2017 as part of SiGMA, the KPMG Malta eSummit attracted over 400 delegates and a host of keynote speakers. The summit’s principal developer is Russell Mifsud, Associate Director of Gaming at KPMG Malta, who also opened the event with a welcome address. Mr Mifsud commented, “KPMG Malta are delighted to be launching our comprehensive iGaming Summit report today. It provides an overview of the day’s sessions and really captures the dynamic and resilient spirit of the iGaming sector. As KPMG Malta continue to service the premier gaming companies in this jurisdiction, we are thrilled to be able to showcase our second annual iGaming summit in this report, sharing our knowledge and key updates with the entire industry.” A fascinating look at how the media is attempting to re-write gaming regulations, was delivered by industry veteran Warwick Bartlett of GBGC. In addition, a jurisdictional update was provided on the key territory of the Netherlands, which has been going through many changes, and is set to open up its wider market in the very near future. Included in the report is the panel session which covered the latest activity in iGaming Mergers and Acquisitions, and mergers are bound to continue in this flourishing sector. New to the eSummit was a lively panel session entitled Battle of the Continents, in which territory experts pitted their wits against each other, extolling the merits and market opportunities of Asia, South America and Africa. Women in gaming is a topical theme and Micky Swindale of KPMG Isle of Man rolled out their latest initiative to encourage gender diversity at board level and in the wider workplace, entitled, #WeAllWantToPlay. A thorough examination of current tax structures and their application to gaming was featured in Bits, Bytes and Withholding Taxes, chaired by KPMG’s tax expert Juanita Brockdorff. General data protection, and the idea of keeping the consumer at the heart of iGaming, is an important and growing theme across the sector. With this in mind, an informative session on the upcoming changes to General Data Protection Regulations was provided. Two of KPMG’s own senior economists, Adam Rivers and Seamus McGowan, gave an insightful presentation on the Economics of Consumer Behaviour and the Gambling sector. Returning this year to host another Masterclass, on the European Regulations for gaming, was the esteemed International Masters of Gaming Law (IMGL). The main purpose of the KPMG Malta summit is to provide a forum for key stakeholders to meet, receive updates on regulatory matters and other news, and openly discuss various topical issues on the subject of iGaming. Are you putting in place the building blocks that will make your organization perform more effectively when the economy recovers? Successful organizations are using this time to transform their business, balancing the critical levers of cash flow — cost, investments and revenue to achieve sustainable business performance. There are three key aspects to consider. 1. Obtain accurate information to drive business insight: Any business today needs to have confidence in the data that's used to report financial results, set future performance expectations, evaluate risk and understand customer interests. By creating standards, disciplines and governance around data that goes all the way down to the item level, and by using technology effectively to access it in real time, business leaders and managers can trust that the information they use to make decisions is as accurate and insightful as possible. 2. Navigate the complexity of business enterprise and make the needed structural changes: Leaders so often turn to quick wins — swapping tap water for bottled water; eliminating non-essential travel and the like — with little regard for their efficacy, lasting impact or unintended consequences. Instead, go below the tip of the iceberg, navigating the complexity inherent in the business, to make needed changes to the business model that can have a lasting impact. Take advantage of technology that can enable the business to run more efficiently. Review the overall people strategy in order to meet future talent and skills requirements. Ensure your procurement process is actually adding value by saving time and costs, rather than creating fragmented purchasing and black holes of spend. 3. Focus on sustainable performance: Find and retain the skills you need. Build disciplines and processes that allow you to be in control of the business. And understand how to harness risk to your advantage. Be bold. If not now, when will you make major changes that could transform the way that you operate? In the past there was perhaps too much focus on refinancing rather than re-engineering, now is the time to make considered and sustainable change. Consider the organization as a single unit. It’s not about how to make HR or IT run more efficiently but how to make the business, as a whole, more efficient over the longer term. Stay the course, embed the right behaviors in your business and look to a more sustainable and profitable future.
