Most business is truly international these days, given the complexity of supply chains and the increasing homogenization of global culture. But there are still plenty of regional cultural norms that must be recognized and respected if you’re going to wheel and deal on the world stage. It pays for any business traveler to research what to do and what not to do before arriving in another country. Understanding how to approach introductions, what certain phrases in meetings really mean, the standard pace of progress, how to navigate a shift from boardroom to more casual settings. Potential pitfalls abound, so do your homework in advance. This isn’t a strictly Western phenomenon. A decade or so ago, China’s elites began using Western etiquette schools to give them a better shot at ‘fitting in’ and establishing toeholds in new markets abroad. And it wasn’t just the upper crust learning these lessons. As China’s population became more affluent and ramped up overseas travel, the government had to publicly remind travelers to comport themselves more respectably abroad, like stop queue-jumping and spitting in the street. Foreigners are ambassadors, for both bad and good. Learning a few phrases in local languages isn’t mandatory but it can set things off on the right foot by demonstrating the importance you’re placing on interacting with your prospective business partners. Businessmen and government figures in most countries have a pretty good command of English, but if not, it pays to have someone you trust doing the interpreting. Last thing you need is both parties coming out of a meeting believing something different. I’ve made the odd social faux pas while traveling, like sitting with my legs crossed in Dubai. But once things like that are pointed out to you, you apologize and everybody’s usually gracious enough to let it slide. Who here has done any cross-border business, and what’s the most valuable lesson you learned in the process?
