OpenAI has deprecated Reddit as a ChatGPT source, so I guess we’re now safe(r) from people being told glue is a pizza topping. A move toward more reliable info sources could offer a template for a small language model focused on a niche topic like, say, digital asset regulations, sourced entirely from the regulations themselves. Of course, in the U.S., you’ll have to wait until the regulators get their act together and actually craft digital asset regulations, but the best things come to those who wait, right? x.com/forgebitz/stat…

The sky-high valuations of some public companies are divorced from reality and due for a reckoning, echoing America’s willingness to keep printing money despite its debt reaching unsustainable levels. Some stock market darlings are booking profits based on actual sales, but others are increasingly reliant on their investments in other firms, whose profits are in turn based on their stakes in other companies. Circular financing can turn into a circular firing squad faster than you think. People love backing a winner and the army of market cheerleaders celebrating every new record high can lead some to believe that this upward trajectory will continue to infinity. So it’s worth asking what (if any) science is behind these valuations. In 2006, Forbes put me on their annual ‘billionaires’ list, using a formula based on the valuation of publicly traded online gambling companies, Bodog’s market share and my ownership stake. It was a pretty sketchy formula but just how sketchy became evident the following year. In 2007, Forbes removed me from their list, based on a change in U.S. online gambling policy that caused the public companies to exit the market. But Bodog didn’t leave, meaning its market share actually grew, and yet Forbes decided that I was suddenly worth less than before. So apply a healthy dose of skepticism to all such lists. And maybe do the same when it comes to analysts’ hyperbolic takes on how you should invest your money. People’s memories can be short. But Arthur Andersen told the world that Enron’s and WorldCom’s books were solid. Ratings agencies slapped AAA ratings on mortgage-backed securities they knew to be dogshit. Not everybody is lying to you for money. But not lying isn’t the same as knowing what you’re talking about. Who here believes today’s company valuations reflect reality? Or is it true that the market can remain irrational longer than companies can remain solvent?
