AI naysayers point to the ‘productivity plateau’ i.e. companies seeing greater output from individual workers but less dramatic gains on a company-wide basis. But this focus on making better widgets faster misses the potential gains from AI tackling the complex problems facing society as a whole. While plenty of AI resources are devoted to longevity-focused gene work, there’s no point living longer if we can’t live healthier. An international moonshot effort should provide the best medical researchers with vast AI resources to accelerate development of cures/treatments for the diseases that have long thwarted efforts to eradicate them or minimize their impact. So many scientific discoveries were the result of ‘happy accidents;’ penicillin, stainless steel, teflon, vulcanized rubber, insulin, x-rays, you name it. AI can throw an endless amount of shit at a wall to see what sticks, conducting theoretical experiments that combine compounds and processes on a scale no human could possibly conduct on their own. The natural world is going through a period of dramatic change that is threatening global crop yields. AI-driven gene editing could produce hardier climate- and pest-resistant crops that pack more nutritional punch in smaller quantities. Yield could be further optimized by developing custom fertilizer blends to match local soil conditions. To me, the agriculture boost could prove the most impactful. The global population has nearly tripled since I was born and it’s a testament to science that hunger levels decreased despite this surge. But the pandemic showed that supply shocks can quickly reverse those trends and climate-related reductions in crop yield will do the same. We need to get over the obsession with quantifying the size of AI’s impact on company quarterly reports and get back to focusing on how AI can make the world a better place. To be sure, AI will have its downsides, but let’s not let those concerns block its potential to improve our planet, because it’s the only one we’ve got.
