‘Longevity’ is now firmly associated with a handful of OTT tech bros, but you don’t need a billionaire’s bankroll to take steps proven to extend your stay on this mortal coil. Longevity doesn’t have to involve pricey gadgets or exotic elixirs. It’s more a matter of doing simple things but doing them methodically, repeatedly, until they’re second nature and just part of your life. First, get your rest. Sleep costs nothing, unless you sleep in, miss work and get fired. Which you’re more likely to do if you’re sleep-deprived. So get your 7-8 hours if your regular life permits, and if it doesn’t, you might need to rethink your priorities. Second, eat right. Shitcan processed ‘food’ that’s devoid of nutrients and generally costs more than real food. Also, eat slightly less, as caloric restriction is a proven life-extender. Third, exercise. You don’t need the latest gear or costly gym memberships. Get some free weights, a chinning bar, maybe a bike, and you’re set. Plain old walking/hiking for extended periods on a regular basis will add years to your life. And leave the phone at home for a tech time out to better appreciate your surroundings. Fourth, have a reason to get up in the morning. Something that interests and excites you, a refuge from the mundane tasks we all endure. Fifth, maintain an active social circle you can engage with on a regular basis, people you can bounce things off and share a laugh with. For proof that all this works, I don’t have to look any further than my dad, who’s nearing 90 years old but still enjoys life to the full. He doesn’t focus on what he can no longer do, he embraces what’s still possible. ‘Rage against the dying of the light’ is solid advice, so rage on. If anyone has any other cost-effective longevity hacks, drop ‘em here.
