Launching a company requires an abundance of self-confidence, but ensuring that your confidence doesn’t become hubris can be like walking a tightrope in a windstorm. When I launched Bodog, there were a lot of naysayers. The sector was crowded with established competitors, the regulatory climate was a minefield, the tech bubble was bursting and signs of the coming recession were limiting people’s discretionary income. But I believed I had what it took to overcome these challenges. I’ve always been willing to work hard to meet whatever challenge presented itself, and I was still young enough that there would be time to start over if I failed. But I didn’t really believe I would fail. Tech is full of similarly confident individuals who swam against the current and lived to celebrate reaching the further shore. But major success early on can convince some that they’re ‘special’ and not subject to the rules that bind more ‘average’ people. If you’re not careful, you’re soon cutting small corners. If you get away with that, cutting bigger corners gets easier. And if the world keeps blowing smoke up your ass, pretty soon you’re Sam Bankman-Fried and your customers are asking where their fucking money went. No doubt founders are built different. But a lot of modern founder rhetoric can come off as elevating themselves by pushing others down. I suspect history would view Neil Armstrong very differently if his first words after setting foot on the lunar surface were “that’s one small step for man….and I’m that man, bitches! SUCK IT, ALDRIN!” I’m sure people who only knew me as the face of Bodog marketing thought I was full of myself and my ego needed stroking. In reality, it was simply an opportunity to do something no one else in that space was doing and it helped the Bodog brand cut through the noise. It’s healthy to celebrate your accomplishments, especially when they’re achieved against lousy odds. Just keep in mind that, all your hard work aside, a million things beyond your control had to go right to realize that success. And there’s no guarantee those slot reels will all line up in your favour next time. So a little humility might be in order. How do you view today’s ‘founder energy?’ Unnecessary and occasionally off-putting braggadocio? Or a necessary prerequisite for success?

The new Cape Fear TV series is getting a lot of attention and made me think of Mitchum’s epic original performance as Max Cady. Was interested to read in Lee Server’s Mitchum biography how that creepy AF egg-smearing scene was largely improvised. Not at all surprised by the book’s subtitle: “Baby, I don’t care.”
