Never thought much of those ‘trust-building’ exercises some companies subject their staff to in the hopes of developing ‘team spirit.’ In my experience, the best way to build trust with anyone is to share a foxhole with them when the shit goes off for real. If you survive that experience, or better still, not just survive but continue advancing your ball down the field, both of you implicitly understand that the other will have your back when the shooting starts up again.

Since the pandemic, a lot of people with no previous ‘work from home’ experience have discovered how difficult ‘switching off’ can be. As an early internet adopter who found it liberating to be able to keep working wherever I was, I’ve had enough experience to know when to shut the laptop lid and return to the real world. I knew a guy who did a lot of Photoshop work back in the day who had to learn to force himself to periodically turn away from the monitor and refocus on something across the room to avoid the eye strain that came from staring too long at something close-range. I’m a gym rat and while I love exercising, you quickly learn that muscle growth occurs outside the gym, while your body is recovering from the workout. The muscle maxim of ‘stimulate, don’t annihilate’ is also applicable to mental approaches. There will be times when periods of sustained effort and narrow focus are required. Otherwise, striking a balance is key to avoiding burnout.
